Event Details

We are thrilled to announce The Community’s 5th Annual Correcting the Narrative Celebration: Learning is Liberation, presented by Ascendium Education Group and in partnership with the McNeely Prison Education Consortium. This four-day series of public events confronts the realities of the criminal legal system through immersive experiences and critical conversations held across local campuses.

From Monday, November 3 to Thursday, November 6, participants will have the opportunity to step into carceral experiences and envision a safer, healthier future. Each event is designed to deepen public understanding of incarceration and highlight the transformative power of education.

This year’s lineup includes:

  • Prison Birth Simulations at Alverno College and Mount Mary University

  • Criminal Legal Simulations at Carroll University and UW–Milwaukee

  • Solitary Confinement Experience at UW–Milwaukee

  • Reels & Reflections: Documentary Clips & Panel Discussion at UW–Milwaukee

The week concludes with our only event with paid tickets—the 5th Annual Correcting the Narrative Celebration on Thursday, November 6, at the Helen Zelazo Center on the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee campus. This culminating celebration honors individuals impacted by the criminal legal system who are pursuing or have pursued education — sharing powerful stories of resilience, hope, and achievement. Guests will enjoy heavy appetizers, live musical performances, and a chance to celebrate our awardees.

As always, we proudly center the talents of formerly incarcerated entrepreneurs — from caterers and musicians to graphic designers and artists — ensuring every aspect of the event reflects our values of highlighting the successes, humanity, and agency of people with criminal records.

The events at UWM are made possible in collaboration with The Helen Bader School of Social Welfare, Center for 21st Century Studies, and the Center for Student Experience and Talent.
