April is Second Chances Month

Governor Evers proclaims April as Second Chance month! |
↳ At EXPO, we believe men and women with conviction and arrest records should be viewed as valued human beings, members of families, and assets to communities. And because we are all human, we believe that everyone deserves second chances. We believe, in the words of one EXPO staff member, that “a second chance is an invitation to learn; it’s an opportunity to grow into forgiveness and restoration. It’s an expression of love.” Because of these beliefs, we join with criminal reform efforts across the state and country in recognizing April as Second Chance Month. Further, we are pleased that Governor Tony Evers signed a proclamation commending the observance of Second Chance Month to all our state’s residents. In doing so, he demonstrates a desire to create real opportunities for our formerly incarcerated brothers and sisters to thrive in our communities. Let’s work together with him to make those second chances include Unlocking the Vote in Wisconsin, removing barriers to safe, dignified housing and vocational opportunities that allow real growth to become a reality in Wisconsin! That’s a true second chance. |
A Note from EXPO’s Director |
↳ We are all sacred people and every person, young and old, is a gift who deserves to overcome fear and behold wonder. But too many are silenced and disempowered by the impacts of the criminal injustice system. Our vision is to transform that system and embark on a campaign to develop holistic community-based solutions to incarceration. Our lived experience and knowledge can and will directly transform flawed systems into the solutions that will meet our community’s needs. Together, we must amplify the political consciousness, political power, leadership, and professional development of formerly incarcerated people. In doing so, we will continue to push the message that not only do we need a seat at the table, we also need to set the agenda and center our voices in the work that needs to be done! |
