JOB SUMMARY:
Odyssey Beyond Bars offers college jumpstart courses to students incarcerated in Wisconsin state prisons. We are part of the UW Odyssey Project, which for 19 years has empowered students living in poverty to overcome obstacles, find their voices and reframe their futures. Many program alumni use their Odyssey Beyond Bars experience as a first step toward a college degree and as a foundation for success when they leave prison and return to their communities.
This position is responsible for supporting formerly incarcerated alumni of the Odyssey Beyond Bars program and helping those alumni overcome obstacles and complete a college degree. These obstacles can include a wide array of challenges, including academic and financial aid concerns, and problems related to poverty such as housing instability, food insecurity, domestic abuse, substance abuse, and challenges with employment and mental health.
This position will work closely with other members of the Odyssey Beyond Bars team and various campus units to coordinate support for program alumni who are living in communities across the state. The successful candidate must be willing to prioritize face-to-face contact with alumni when possible and must travel regularly throughout Milwaukee County, where many OBB alumni are located, and occasionally to other communities and prisons throughout the state. This position will also coordinate services with nonprofit re-entry service providers in Milwaukee and elsewhere.
We embrace diversity and welcome people of color and people who have been impacted by the justice system to apply.
